Barry Manilow is taking himself off the road. In a statement posted to Instagram on Tuesday, August 25, the 83-year-old singer told fans he is pausing his touring schedule until October — days after abruptly canceling two nights of his Las Vegas residency.
“Hi everybody — Barry here. And I want you to be the first to know that we’re going to take a quick break,” the message began. “We just finished a fantastic summer tour. 29 shows in 68 days. The shows were fantastic. The audiences were fantastic. And I sounded fantastic. But it seems that we were pushing a little too hard.”
He signed off in the register his audience has known for fifty years. “Now we all need to sit down and shut up,” he said. “So, we’re going to take a break until we return to the Westgate Las Vegas on October 8th. When I’ll be singing like a bird. I hope to see you then.”
The summer that caught up with him
Twenty-nine shows in sixty-eight days is close to a date every other night, and it would test a performer half Manilow’s age. It also came on top of a UK arena run in June that took in a night at London’s O2 Arena — a tour Far Out reports he completed without incident, in contrast to a US schedule that has repeatedly slipped over the past twelve months.
The strain showed first at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Manilow canceled his Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22 performances at short notice. “We’re very sorry but we have to cancel tonight’s and tomorrow’s performances,” a statement issued on his behalf read. “Due to technical and vocal problems, we’re unable to put on our show.”
Those were not the month’s only casualties. On Tuesday, August 4, Manilow postponed a concert in Lexington, Kentucky shortly before it was due to begin, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” That Lexington date had already been moved once, earlier in the year.
A year of stops and starts
The context most fans will reach for is his health, and the timeline is not in dispute. At the end of last year Manilow disclosed that he had been diagnosed with stage one lung cancer. He canceled a run of January shows and postponed his planned Las Vegas residency dates while he underwent treatment. In February he pushed further dates back, saying he needed additional recovery time.
The treatment was a lobectomy — surgical removal of a lobe of the lung. By the time he returned to the stage in Las Vegas on March 26, Manilow had told fans he was cancer-free, describing himself as “one of the lucky ones.” He then toured heavily through the spring and summer, which is precisely the schedule he has now described as pushing too hard.
Where the accounts diverge
This is worth stating plainly, because the coverage does not all say the same thing. Several British outlets — among them The Sun, the Daily Mail and GB News — have framed this week’s announcement primarily against his cancer diagnosis, with headlines counting the months since he disclosed it and describing him as “forced” to cancel amid health woes.
Manilow’s own statement does something different. It does not mention cancer at all. It attributes the break to the volume of the summer schedule and, by implication, to his voice — the reason given for the Las Vegas cancellations days earlier was “technical and vocal problems.” He has said publicly that he is cancer-free following surgery. Both things can be true at once: an 83-year-old who had a lobe of his lung removed in the winter and then played twenty-nine shows in ten weeks is an 83-year-old with a good reason to rest, whether or not the disease is back. What is not established, by any outlet, is that it is. Nobody speaking on the record — not Manilow, not his representatives — has linked this break to a recurrence, and People has said it approached his representative for comment.
What happens next
The plan, as it stands, is short. Manilow returns to the Westgate Las Vegas on October 8, roughly six weeks from the announcement. New Westgate dates are due to be announced next week, and the canceled August performances are expected to be rescheduled as part of that.
That is a modest gap by the standards of an artist who has spent the last decade announcing farewells and then not quite leaving. The “Last Concert” branding attached to shows including his July 2025 date at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena has always described individual cities rather than the end of the road, and nothing in Tuesday’s statement suggests otherwise. He framed it as a pause, not a retirement, and he framed it in a joke.
For an audience that has watched Vivian Campbell, Bret Michaels and Frank Beard come off the road in the space of a single month, another legacy artist stepping back mid-schedule will land heavily. The distinction here is that Manilow set the terms himself, gave a date to come back on, and did it in his own voice — which, on the evidence of the last twelve months, is the version of this story worth waiting for.
