John Lennon Has a Grandson: Sean Ono Lennon Announces the Birth of Son Aurelius

Sean Ono Lennon became a father on Tuesday, and in doing so made John Lennon a grandfather for the first time. Sean and his longtime partner, the model and musician Charlotte Kemp Muhl, announced the birth of a son named Aurelius on social media on Tuesday evening, posting a photograph of the two of them holding the baby.

The caption was pure Sean: “Okay so… Charlotte and I would like to announce that we have indeed created a Human Bean! His name is, Aurelius! Thank you!” He shared further pictures of the pair with their son, captioning one of them simply “Baby Momma!”

What makes the announcement land harder than the average celebrity baby news is arithmetic. Sean was five years old when his father was killed outside the Dakota in December 1980. He is 50 now — reported as 51 by Showbiz411, though most outlets and his October 1975 birth date put him at 50 — and he has a son of his own for the first time.

    A birth nobody saw coming

There was no public pregnancy announcement and no build-up. The first sign that anything had happened came not from Sean but from his older half-brother. According to Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman, who reported the story late on August 31, Julian Lennon posted — and then deleted — a message congratulating Sean and Charlotte and noting that he had become an uncle. Friedman wrote at the time that he was still confirming the news and that “Uncle Julian’s thrill about having a nephew may have jumped the social media gun.”

Sean’s own announcement followed roughly a day later, on the evening of September 1, which is when the story moved from a single-outlet report to confirmed fact. That gap is worth noting for anyone reading coverage published in between: for about 24 hours, the only source for the birth was a deleted post by a family member, and reporting during that window was appropriately hedged.

Outlets also differ on where Sean posted. Rolling Stone and iHeartRadio describe an Instagram post; Showbiz411 quotes the same wording from his account on X. The likeliest explanation is that he cross-posted, but the detail has been reported inconsistently.

One more piece of framing deserves care. Aurelius has been widely described as the first grandchild of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. That is true of John. It is less precise as a statement about Yoko, who — as Showbiz411 pointed out — already has two grandchildren through her daughter Kyoko Chan Cox, from her marriage to Anthony Cox. Aurelius is unambiguously John Lennon’s first grandchild, and Sean’s first child. Julian Lennon, John’s son with his first wife Cynthia, has no children.

Charlotte Kemp Muhl, and a partnership that is also a band

Kemp Muhl, 39, is not a bystander in this story. A model since her teens, she has spent most of the last two decades as Sean’s creative partner as much as his romantic one. The two met in 2005 and have been together since around 2007, and in 2008 they formed The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, a psych-folk project that produced two studio albums and a good deal of touring. iHeart reports that their relationship began in an unfashionably analog way, with the two exchanging letters before they officially started dating.

In the days after the announcement, Kemp Muhl posted about the practicalities of new parenthood with the same dry humor, mentioning that she had been playing Aphex Twin and Stravinsky to the baby. Congratulations arrived from across the music world, including from Patti Smith.

The boy the song was written for

The detail that gives this story its weight is a record. In November 1980, John Lennon and Yoko Ono released Double Fantasy, which included “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)” — a lullaby written for Sean, then a small child, in which Lennon reflects on fatherhood and imagines watching his son grow up. Lennon was murdered three weeks after the album’s release. He never got to do the watching.

Sean has spent his adult life managing what his father left behind rather than escaping it. Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning in December 2025, he said he had “technically” taken over as custodian of John’s legacy, a role his mother had held for decades. He was careful to frame it as a shared responsibility rather than a personal possession.

“But obviously the world is also the custodian of his legacy, I would say,” Sean told the program. “I’m just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn’t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko. That’s how I look at it.”

He also described the job in plainer terms: “My parents gave me so much that I think it’s the least I can do to try and support their legacy in my lifetime. I feel like I just owe it to them. It’s a personal thing.”

As for what happens next, very little, publicly, is the likely answer. Sean has kept his private life almost entirely out of view for years, and neither he nor Kemp Muhl has indicated any plans to say more. There is no announced project tied to the birth and no scheduled appearance.

What has changed is smaller and larger than a news cycle. A song written in 1980 by a father who did not live to see his son turn six now has a listener it was never written for — a boy named Aurelius, born forty-six years later, who will grow up being told what his grandfather sounded like.
