Kelly Clarkson’s Brooklyn Shop Feud Escalates as Security Footage Surfaces and Owner Says She ‘Put Us in Danger’

Kelly Clarkson’s weekend complaint about a Brooklyn novelty shop has turned into a full-blown standoff, and on Tuesday night it picked up something neither side had offered before: video. Podcaster Pablo Torre posted security camera footage of Clarkson’s visit to Art of Play, and within hours a co-owner of the shop was telling reporters that the singer “has put us in danger.”

The footage has no sound, which means it shows where everyone stood and for how long, but not what anyone said. That has not stopped either camp from claiming it as proof.

How a five-minute visit became a national story

The visit happened on Saturday, October 10. Clarkson, who recently wrapped The Kelly Clarkson Show, went into Art of Play, a Brooklyn store that sells playing cards, puzzles and mechanical curiosities. Her interest landed on Molly, a singing and dancing bird automaton mounted on the wall.

Shortly afterward she posted on X that a sales associate had treated her as if she couldn’t afford anything in the shop. According to Stereogum’s rundown of her posts, she wrote, “Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale,” and told followers they could visit if they enjoyed being treated like Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman.

Art of Play answered on Instagram on Sunday. The store said Molly is “permanently attached to the wall and isn’t for sale,” and that it had been “attacked by 8 million people who have never visited our store.” Clarkson came back that night with a photo she said showed a price tag on the bird, calling the staff “not only rude” but “also a liar.” She added that being a small business is no “free pass” to treat customers badly.

By Monday the store had refined its account. As KMPH reported, it said the $15,000 figure referred to a nearly identical automaton owned by its creator, and that staff had offered to show Clarkson a different singing bird. Newsweek identified the creator as Seattle artist Bliss Kolb and put the alternative, a German-made automaton, at about $2,000. The store said Clarkson left before seeing it.

What the security footage shows, and what it doesn’t

Torre’s video runs the length of the visit. Just Jared, summarizing Torre’s post, timed it at four minutes and fifty seconds, and said Torre noted that nobody appeared to be discussing a problem and that the employee looked “baffled.” The same report said Clarkson’s first X post went up about 15 minutes after she left.

Other outlets described the same clip a little differently. TMZ said Clarkson points at the bird while talking to one employee, then near the entrance waves her hands and talks “emotionally” with a worker before walking out. TheWrap said she was there with her children, flagged down one employee in front of the bird, and later spoke with a second employee while “gesturing and appearing upset.”

Those accounts are not necessarily in conflict, but they show how much rests on interpretation. TMZ itself pointed out that the video can show what happened, but not how the conversation went. Whether a clerk was condescending is a question of tone, and a silent camera cannot answer it.

There is a second dispute the footage doesn’t touch: the price tag. Stereogum reported that other users posted photos from recent visits that seemed to show no tag on Molly, and questioned whether Clarkson’s photo dated from 2024.

    “Put us in danger”

The shop’s tone has shifted as the story has grown. Speaking to Inside Edition, owner Adam Rubin said, according to TheWrap, that “Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger,” and that staff now fear for their safety. He described the response after she “used her platform to attack us” as “social warfare.” Rubin also said the shop was crowded when she arrived, that she was dressed like any other customer, and that staff treated her “like a normal person.”

People, Entertainment Weekly and Fox News have since reported that the shop now lists the bird at $15 million, a number the shop has tied to the demand the feud has created.

The fight has also taken on a political edge. The Daily Beast collected reactions from right-leaning commentators, including Fox News host Greg Gutfeld, who called the complaint “garbage” and a “do you know who I am” moment. Clarkson’s defenders argue the opposite: that a customer being talked down to is a real experience whoever it happens to, and that she was simply describing it.

    Where it goes from here

Neither side has backed down. The store has said it reached out to Clarkson privately and hopes the two can one day laugh about it. A representative for Clarkson did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment on the footage.

For now, the evidence comes down to a five-minute silent video, two sets of social media posts that contradict each other, and a mechanical bird that nobody can buy, at least not for $15,000.
