Dionne Warwick Cancels Carnegie Hall Appearance, Says Leg and Foot Pain Left Her Unable to Stand or Walk

Dionne Warwick missed a scheduled Sunday appearance at Carnegie Hall this week, and she has now explained why in her own words. The 85-year-old singer told Page Six that pain in her leg and foot had left her unable to stand or walk, and that she had no choice but to pull out.

“My leg and foot would not allow me to stand nor walk at the moment,” she said in the statement, as reported by Just Jared, which carried the Page Six quotes in full. She apologized to the fans who had bought tickets to see her, said she was concentrating on rest and recovery, and asked for “understanding and grace.” She was also clear that the pain, and nothing else, was the reason she stayed home.

    The show she missed

Warwick was booked for Sunday, October 11, at Deborah Silver & Fabulous Friends: Voices for ALS, a charity benefit held in Zankel Hall, the smaller auditorium inside the Carnegie Hall building in New York City. Most outlets have described it simply as a Carnegie Hall performance, which is fair enough. Warwick has played the hall many times across a career that now runs past six decades, according to The News, and her own statement referred to missing “the chance to see you all at Carnegie.”

What is less clear is how much notice organizers had. None of the reports so far say whether another performer stepped into her spot, or whether the benefit adjusted its running order. Her statement was given to Page Six on Monday, October 12, the day after the event, which suggests her absence was noticed on the night before the reason became public.

    A year of leg trouble

This is not the first time Warwick’s leg has kept her off a stage. In 2025 she had emergency surgery for what she called “unbearable” leg pain, on the very day she was due to fly to the UK for the Soul Town Festival in Kent. She canceled that appearance and several other shows, and told fans on social media that her doctor had rushed her into the operating room. “I’m doing okay, do not worry!” she wrote at the time, before asking followers to send her TV and movie recommendations while she recovered.

FemaleFirst reports that she felt the speed of that surgery may have spared her something worse.

The exact timeline of that first episode is a little muddled in the coverage. Entertainment Now dates the surgery to September 2025, but notes that an update Warwick posted on her official website in March 2026 described the leg problem as beginning “since last October.” In that same March update she said she was walking again, gingerly, and had started performing after roughly five months of recovery. Whichever month it began, the picture is the same: a long, slow comeback from a serious leg problem, and now a fresh flare of pain severe enough to cancel a New York date.

Warwick has not said whether this week’s pain is connected to last year’s surgery, and none of the outlets covering the story have reported a new diagnosis. She has only said that she cannot currently stand or walk, and that she is resting.

Not retiring, but finishing on her terms

Warwick has always bristled at talk of retirement. When her 2022 tour was billed as She’s Back One Last Time, fans assumed it was a farewell. She told Us Weekly that the title “should never have been” used, and that she would stop only when she could no longer meet her own standards, according to FemaleFirst.

She has, however, been open that her recording career is drawing to a close. In March she announced DWuets, a duets album written entirely by Diane Warren, which Essence reported would be her final album. The lead single, “Ocean in the Desert,” pairs her with Cynthia Erivo. Warwick called it her “finest work yet,” saying she did not think she could top it. Essence gave an August 2026 release window at the time, while Entertainment Now this week describes the album as still in progress, with a further single featuring Kehlani planned. The sources do not agree on where the project stands, and Warwick has not addressed it in her latest statement.

    What happens next

For now there is no word on future dates. Warwick did not say how long she expects to be off her feet, and she has not announced any further cancellations. Given her history, she will likely update fans herself when she has news: she has always been one of the more direct voices in music on social media, whether she is thanking fans or roasting a TV show she does not like.

What is certain is the size of the catalog waiting for her return. From “Walk On By” and “I Say a Little Prayer” to “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” and “That’s What Friends Are For,” her songs are part of the furniture of American pop. At 85, with five Grammys and a final album on the way, she has nothing left to prove. Fans will simply want her back on her feet.
