Pat Boone, 92, Tells Donald Trump to ‘Be Quiet’ in Video Message: ‘I Say This as a Friend’

Pat Boone has been one of American conservatism’s most dependable celebrity voices for decades. This weekend he used it to tell Donald Trump to stop talking.

The 92-year-old singer posted a two-minute video to his social accounts addressing the president directly, telling him he appeared exhausted and that the way he speaks in public has stopped sounding presidential. “Right now, I feel like you’re very tired,” Boone said, in remarks reported by The Daily Beast. “And I’m worried that many of us haven’t prayed enough for you because I think you’re wearing out and you’re feeling the pressure and expressing yourself in ways that are not becoming to you. They’re not presidential.”

Then came the advice itself. “So may I recommend something very highly that you be quiet, that you quit talking about the things that you want to be, people to be proud of,” Boone said. “Let them discover those things for themselves.”

He went further, suggesting the president stop taking questions from reporters altogether for a spell. “Let there be nobody to ask you any questions. Nobody to hear what you wanna say or possibly brag about,” he said. “And then as you hear nothing, the deafening roar of silence, it may convince you that being like Ronald Reagan and using a sense of humor, as well as being very polite and respectful will get you more hearers, better reporting, more support while there is still time.”

The video closes on the line that has travelled furthest: “I say this as a friend: try for just a little while to be quiet.”

Alongside it, Boone published a written version of the same appeal. The Jerusalem Post quoted it at length: “I’ve known and supported President Trump for many years, and I offer these thoughts in the spirit of friendship and concern. Sometimes the strongest thing a leader can do is say less, listen more, and let his actions speak for themselves.” It ends: “Mr. President, I say this as a friend. For just a little while, try being quiet. You may be surprised how loudly that silence speaks.”

Outlets do not entirely agree on when it landed. The Daily Beast dates the video to Friday, while the Jerusalem Post describes the message as arriving on Saturday, and Showbiz411 wrote it up on Saturday morning as a fresh post. All three point to the same item on Boone’s account, which carries the video and the written statement together.

Why it lands differently coming from him

Plenty of musicians have criticized Donald Trump. Almost none of them voted for him twice.

Boone did. He backed Trump during the 2016 campaign and recorded robocalls aimed at Christian and senior voters in the closing days before the election, according to the Jerusalem Post, which also notes he told The Daily Beast in 2022 that he voted for Trump in both 2016 and 2020. The Daily Beast reports he has endorsed dozens of conservative candidates over the years, and that he first met Trump at a Mar-a-Lago fundraiser back when Trump was still hosting The Apprentice — describing him then as “a very accomplished younger man.”

The Reagan comparison is not a rhetorical flourish either. Boone appeared alongside Ronald Reagan at political and White House events through the 1980s; the Jerusalem Post cites Reagan Presidential Library records placing him at a Washington charity reception and an Illinois Republican rally in 1982, and at a National Religious Broadcasters convention in 1984. When Boone holds up Reagan’s humor and courtesy as a model, he is describing a man he stood next to.

Nor is this the first time he has said a version of this out loud. The Jerusalem Post reports that in that 2022 interview Boone recalled asking Trump directly, during the 2016 campaign, to drop the insulting nicknames — telling him he was behaving like a “schoolyard bully” and that it was not presidential. In February this year, Parade reported Boone telling the Daily Mail that while “it’s obvious he’s a genius at what he does,” Trump is “his own worst enemy,” adding: “He won’t wait for other people to brag on him. He wants to make sure you know, and he wants his name on too many things.”

In other words, this is a complaint Boone has been making privately and publicly for a decade. What changed is the volume.

The timing, and what the coverage is careful not to claim

Boone’s post arrived roughly a day after Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House, accusing the three outlets of publishing “fake news,” “fiction” and “lies,” and warning that others could follow.

It is an obvious thing to connect, and the Jerusalem Post pointedly declines to connect it: Boone did not mention the media ban, it notes, and there is no basis to say his comments were a direct response to it. What can be said is that the appeal landed while the president was publicly defending that decision — and that a man asking Trump to take fewer questions from reporters was, at minimum, speaking into a week about exactly that.

The Daily Beast reported that the White House did not immediately respond to its request for comment.

    What happens next

Probably nothing formal. There is no campaign behind this and no open letter with co-signatories — just a 92-year-old man with a camera and a long history with both the Republican Party and the man currently leading it.

Whether anyone inside Trump’s own coalition follows him is the thing worth watching. Boone is not running for anything and not selling a book on the back of it. He spends much of the two minutes saying he is praying for the president.

That may be the most pointed thing about it. Boone did not attack Trump’s record, his policies or his mandate. He suggested the president would be more persuasive if he said less — and then, having said it, stopped.
