Bryan Adams Answers Trump’s ‘Lake America’ Order With New Song ‘Lake Ontario’

Bryan Adams has answered Donald Trump’s attempt to rebrand Lake Ontario the only way a rock singer can: with a song. “Lake Ontario,” released Wednesday with an official video, is a mid-tempo rocker that walks through the lake’s history and then turns its fire on the White House’s decision to call it “Lake America.”

The track is a bonus song on How’s It Goin’, the album Adams releases on November 6 through his own BAD Records label. The rest of that record was written as a tribute to Canada. This one reads more like a reply.

How a lake ended up in a political fight

The dispute dates back to August, when Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” according to The Canadian Press. CP24 reports that the move followed a public spat between Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

The name has roots older than either country. It comes from an Indigenous word, and Canadian officials have not recognized the new label. Prime Minister Mark Carney has pointed out that the name Lake Ontario predates both Canada and the United States, CP24 notes.

On the ground nothing changes. The lake is shared by Ontario and New York State, and an executive order only governs what U.S. federal agencies call it. But the symbolism has landed hard in Canada, coming on top of months of talk from Washington about Canada as a “51st state.” Adams has a song by that name on the new album too, one that has already become a live favorite, Parade reports.

    What the song actually says

Most of “Lake Ontario” is a history lesson set to guitars. Consequence describes lyrics that trace the lake from its glacial formation through Indigenous stewardship, European exploration and its industrial years, ending on the renaming order.

That last section is where it bites. According to Consequence, the lyrics also mention the Epstein files and the current war with Iran, framing the renaming as a distraction from bigger problems facing the administration. The Canadian Press puts it a little more cautiously, saying the song “appears to take shots” at Trump.

Adams himself stayed above the lyrics in his statement and went for the long view. “Empires and regimes, dictators and kings, they all come and go,” he said in a press release quoted by Parade. “Lake Ontario is forever.”

He described the song as being for “all the sane people on both shores who know that the current madness will pass” — a line that matters. Adams is not pitching it as Canada versus America. “Both shores” includes the millions of Americans who live along the lake’s southern edge, from Rochester to Oswego.

No response from the White House had been reported as of Wednesday afternoon.

A love letter to Canada, with a late addition

How’s It Goin’ was never meant to be a protest album. Adams told Exclaim! in September that “the idea was simply to make a record about Canada.” It grew out of a song he wrote for the documentary Canada’s Wild Eastern Edge, and the research for that sent him off writing about the country’s history. The tracklist includes “The Ballad of Terry Fox,” “The Battle of Lundy’s Lane” and “When Canada Joined Newfoundland,” alongside “51st State.”

“Lake Ontario” sits at the end of the list as a bonus track, and the outlets don’t quite agree on how it will be released. Consequence calls it a digital bonus track, and Exclaim! listed it the same way in September. Exclaim!’s writer guessed it was left off the physical pressing because the renaming row was too recent for the records already in production, though that was speculation rather than anything Adams said. Parade, working from the label’s announcement, describes a 12-track album with “Lake Ontario” as a bonus, available on CD and vinyl. Fans who want it on a physical format may want to check the edition before ordering.

Adams is not the first Canadian act to catch this mood. The Canadian Press notes that Blue Rodeo’s “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet” went viral in August, with co-frontman Greg Keelor calling it a “rallying call.”

    Timing, and what comes next

The release lands days before the U.S. midterm elections, a point CP24 highlights, and on the same day Adams opens a five-night residency at Wynn Las Vegas. That run lasts through November 1, Consequence reports, after which he heads to Europe, then Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Scandinavia, with dates booked into August 2027.

So Adams will be singing in the U.S. this week, and the question is whether “Lake Ontario” makes the setlist. At 66, more than four decades after “Summer of ’69,” he has rarely been this pointed on record. He is clearly comfortable with it, and the November 6 album is now likely to be remembered for its bonus track more than its 12 others.

His message is simpler than the politics around it. Names on maps come and go. The lake, as he puts it, is forever.
