Zach Bryan Wears ‘Free Palestine’ Shirt at Robert Kraft’s Gillette Stadium, Weeks After Kraft Blocked Macklemore

Zach Bryan walked onto the stage at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Friday night wearing a black T-shirt with two words across the front: “Free Palestine.” TheWrap reported that members of his band wore similar shirts, with the moment spreading quickly through fan footage on social media.

On almost any other stage it would have been a statement. At Gillette, it landed as something closer to a challenge. Three weeks earlier, stadium owner Robert Kraft had confirmed that he blocked Macklemore from performing there, after the rapper led crowds in the same two words.

    How Gillette became the flashpoint

The row began in early September, when Ed Sheeran opened his Loop Tour with two shows at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4 and 5. Macklemore was on the bill, and according to Front Office Sports he told the crowd “Free Palestine” and performed his song about the situation in Gaza.

Gillette was due to host the tour on September 25 and 26. Kraft, who also owns the New England Patriots, confirmed he opposed Macklemore appearing, citing the rapper’s “recent actions” and what he called “a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.” In the same statement, reported by Front Office Sports, Kraft said he was willing to meet Macklemore and argued that “standing with the Palestinian people and standing against Hamas, antisemitism and hate should not be mutually exclusive.”

Macklemore then announced he would not play the remaining ten dates. He alleged that Kraft had coordinated with other stadium owners to keep him off their stages too, a claim that rests on Macklemore’s own account. He also said he had told Sheeran that if those words were more offensive than the deaths of Palestinian children in Gaza, the two of them fundamentally disagreed.

    Sheeran in the middle

Sheeran has said little, and what he has said has been carefully hedged. Speaking from the stage in Philadelphia on September 19, he said the situation “put me in the middle of an important, passionate argument about freedom of speech on the most complex issue on the planet,” as reported via AOL. According to Just Jared, Sheeran confirmed that venues had threatened to cancel shows if Macklemore stayed on the bill.

The fallout spread across the tour. Finneas, Lukas Graham and Beoga all withdrew in solidarity with Macklemore, according to the same AOL report. TheWrap reported that Macklemore and Kraft have each since donated millions to humanitarian groups working in Gaza, and that Macklemore has announced a sold-out “Free Palestine” tour of his own. “It’s 2026. Being apolitical during a genocide doesn’t work anymore,” Macklemore said in a statement quoted by AOL.

What Bryan did, and did not, say

It is important to be precise about Friday night. Every outlet covering the show, including Deadline, TheWrap and Al Jazeera, has framed the shirt as a show of support for Macklemore, and the timing and location make that reading hard to avoid. But none of the reports so far quote Bryan explaining it. He wore the shirt; he has not, at least publicly, said why.

The Kraft side has been equally quiet. A Kraft representative declined to comment on the shirt when asked by TheWrap.

Online, the reaction split the way these things usually do. Supporters on X praised the move, with one post quoted by AOL reading “Finally a country artist that isn’t maga.” Others questioned why a country star was wading into a fight that had, until now, belonged to a rapper and a pop star.

    Not his first fight

For anyone who has followed Bryan’s career, the shirt is less of a surprise than it might look. In October 2025, an unreleased song of his called “Bad News” drew fire for a lyric criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Axios reported that then Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called the song “completely disrespectful,” and that the Department of Homeland Security posted a montage of ICE raids set to his music.

Bryan, a Navy veteran, pushed back at the time, saying “This song is about how much I love this country and everyone in it more than anything,” and warning against the track being weaponized. That episode cemented a reputation that sits awkwardly with the assumptions people often make about mainstream country stars, and Friday’s shirt fits squarely within it.

    What happens next

Bryan’s With Heaven On Tour rolls on, with Gregory Alan Isakov and Gabriella Rose on the bill, according to Just Jared. Whether he addresses the shirt from the stage, in a post, or not at all will shape how long this chapter runs.

The bigger question is whether Gillette, and other stadiums, respond. Kraft drew a line against one artist’s words. On Friday another, arguably bigger, artist wore those words on his chest under Kraft’s own lights. So far, the stadium has chosen not to say anything at all.
