The Beach Boys will not be playing Walt Disney World next month. On Wednesday, Disney updated the lineup for EPCOT’s Eat to the Beat Concert Series to show that the band’s two nights at the America Gardens Theatre, November 11 and 12, now belong to John Stamos and his own band, the California Sound. WDW News Today reported that neither Disney nor the Beach Boys gave a reason for the change, and Disney Fanatic said the same.
The swap is striking because of who is filling the slot. Stamos has been part of the Beach Boys’ world since the 1980s, and he has spent much of this year on stage with them. When the EPCOT dates were first announced in August, LaughingPlace reported that Stamos would be joining Mike Love and the band for a “special two night engagement.” Now he is headlining those nights without them.
A year of canceled dates
The EPCOT change caps a difficult stretch for the band, which spent 2026 on a tour marking the 60th anniversary of Pet Sounds. Founding member Bruce Johnston stepped back from performing in March, according to Best Classic Bands. In July, Love announced on Instagram that the band would take “a short break to recharge” and return in September.
That return did not happen as planned. On September 24, Wide Open Country reported that the band had abruptly canceled shows at the Big E in West Springfield, Massachusetts, at the Univest Performance Center in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and at the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. No official reason was given then either.
Love, who is 85, has not disclosed a specific diagnosis. In an earlier Instagram post, cited by Consequence, he said the deaths of his sister Maureen and his cousin Brian Wilson, followed by COVID-19 and bronchitis, had “taken both an emotional and physical toll on me.” In June, Guitar Player noted, he said he felt stronger physically but was “heartbroken emotionally.”
What Stamos said in October
The band finally came back on October 10 at the PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati, its first show since July. Before the set, Stamos told the crowd that Love had “been going through some health issues” and had “had to cancel some shows,” but would not miss that night, according to Consequence. Accounts of the show describe Love being helped on stage, staying seated, and singing mainly backing vocals while Stamos, his son Christian Stamos and guitarist Brian Eichenberger took most of the leads.
The next day, before a show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Stamos went further in an Instagram post. “My beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor, Mike Love, is facing serious health challenges,” he wrote, as quoted by Entertainment Now. He added that “despite doctors, family and friends urging him to focus on his health, he insists on being on stage,” and that “we don’t know what the future holds.” Guitar Player reported that Stamos also wrote that part of him wondered “if this could be the last time” he would get to stand behind Love and play those songs.
Outlets have not all reported the Nashville date the same way. Guitar Player put the Ryman show on Sunday, October 11, while a video it embedded was labeled October 10. Best Classic Bands relied on Stamos’s own post, which described flying to Nashville for a show “tonight” on October 11.
Where the accounts differ
The coverage of Wednesday’s EPCOT news splits on one point. WDW News Today and Disney Fanatic both say no reason was given for the Beach Boys’ removal. MickeyBlog, however, tied the change directly to Love’s ongoing health issues and said the band had suspended its tour. As of Wednesday, there was no public statement from the band or Disney confirming that link. Rolling Stone’s headline described it as the Beach Boys canceling “another show,” which places it in the same pattern as September’s cancellations without assigning a cause.
What is on the record is limited: the band is out of the EPCOT dates, Stamos and the California Sound are in, and two weeks earlier Stamos described Love’s health in serious terms. Anything beyond that, including whether this means a longer break, has not been confirmed by the band.
What happens next
For Disney visitors, little changes on paper. The America Gardens Theatre shows go ahead on November 11 and 12 with Stamos, who knows the Beach Boys catalog as well as almost anyone outside the band and sang lead on many of those songs at the band’s October shows.
For the band, the questions are bigger. Consequence’s October report listed further Beach Boys dates in Florida and Virginia for November. With the Florida dates now gone and no statement from the group, fans holding tickets for the rest of the year will be watching closely for an update from Love’s camp.
Mike Love has fronted the Beach Boys for more than six decades and has long made a point of never leaving the group. “I’m the only person in the Beach Boys who’s never left the group,” he told Jeff Tamarkin in 2016, as Best Classic Bands recalled this month. Whatever comes next, Stamos made clear in October that no one around the band is pretending to know.
