Ian Gillan Says Procedure Was Successful as Deep Purple Tour Stays on Hold

Ian Gillan has given Deep Purple fans the update they have been waiting a week for. On Saturday, November 7, the 81-year-old singer posted a short message on social media saying he “had a procedure yesterday which was successful,” and that he now has to rest so he can make a complete recovery and be as fit as possible before he goes back to work. He thanked fans for their patience, apologized again for the disruption, and signed off the way he always does: “Cheers, IG.” Blabbermouth and Metal Addicts both carried the statement within hours.

What he still has not said is what the procedure was for. Neither Gillan nor his bandmates have named the condition behind the scare, and Saturday’s message didn’t change that. So the news is a relief, but it’s a carefully limited one: the procedure worked, he is recovering, and there is no date yet for his return.

How a European tour came apart in three days

The trouble started on Halloween weekend in Germany. Deep Purple were due at Leipzig’s QI Arena on October 31 when the band announced that Gillan had been hospitalized after a medical emergency. That show was called off, and so was the next night’s date at Hamburg’s Sporthalle, according to Metal Addicts.

For a day or two it looked like a short pause. Then, on November 2, Gillan posted a message on the band’s official site that made the situation clearer and more serious. He wrote that he’d had a medical problem in Leipzig that needed urgent attention at the hospital, and that he had hoped to get the all-clear to carry on with the tour. Instead, he said, “there are very serious risks involved in me doing so.” On the advice of his medical team and management, the rest of the European and UK tour was postponed “until further notice.” He called the decision “in the best interest all round.”

That one message took a big piece out of the band’s year. Blabbermouth reports that the postponed run covered four more German shows, a show in the Netherlands, four in France and five in the UK. The British leg, as listed by Music Times from the promoter’s schedule, was:

    • November 18: Newcastle, Utilita Arena
    • November 19: Glasgow, OVO Hydro
    • November 21: Birmingham, bp pulse LIVE
    • November 22: Manchester, AO Arena
    • November 24: London, Eventim Apollo
    • November 25: London, Royal Albert Hall

The Royal Albert Hall show was supposed to be the last European date of the tour. It’s a room with real history for the band, and fans had been looking forward to the return since it was announced in February.

    Why fans were worried

Part of the reason the news landed so hard is Gillan’s age. He’s 81, and Music Times noted that most of the lineup is in its late 70s or early 80s, with guitarist Simon McBride the exception. For a band of that age, an emergency hospitalization and the words “very serious risks” are enough to set off every alarm.

Gillan has been unusually open about getting older on the road. A year ago he told the British outlet Music News that he had only around 30 percent of his vision left and that it would not improve. As reported by Belgium’s RTBF, he also said he would stop when his energy went, and added that “we’re not far from it.” He kept going anyway. 2026 has been one of the band’s busiest years in a while: a new album, Splat!, in July, a North American tour with Kansas, and the European and UK run that is now on hold.

Saturday’s message reads like it came from someone who means to come back. Gillan’s wording is about resting so he can make a “complete recovery” and getting fit “before getting back to work.” There’s no talk of stepping away.

    What happens next

The practical questions are still open. No new dates have been announced for the postponed shows. The band and promoters have said they are working on reschedules, and Music Times reports that existing tickets stay valid for the new dates. Fans holding tickets have been told to keep them and wait for word from the promoters, and not to assume an automatic refund.

Further out, Deep Purple still have Latin American shows on the books for December. Blabbermouth says the six-date run is still scheduled. Local listings, including The Rio Times, put the band in São Paulo on December 5, followed by Santiago, Buenos Aires, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City through December 19. Nobody from the band has said whether Gillan will be fit for those dates. His statement gave no timeline at all, and it would be a stretch to read one into it.

For now, the news is simple and welcome. A week after he was taken to hospital in Leipzig, the voice of “Smoke on the Water,” “Highway Star” and “Child in Time” says the procedure went well and he is resting. With Gillan, the next update usually comes from him, signed “IG.”
