From Church Brawls To DUI’s: The Year Randy Travis Couldn’t Stay Out of Trouble

The year is 2012, and Randy Travis is still that unmistakable voice in country music, known for his classic hits and neotraditional style but his life is about to go from bad to worse.

Things start off on a shaky note in February, when Randy is arrested for public intoxication near a church. Reports say he was sitting in his parked truck with an open bottle of wine and was consequently thrown into Denton County jail.

In the April, Randy’s personal life clashed with his professional world when he faced a heated legal battle with his ex-wife and ex-manager, Elizabeth “Lib” Travis. She claimed Randy “intentionally interfered” with her work, which she says dragged down his own career.

Their war of words quickly escalated, with each accusing the other of wrecking their finances. It’s like a country soap opera unfolding in real time, reminding everyone that relationships and business don’t always go too well together.

Then August rolls in, and it’s a doozy. While driving his Pontiac Trans Am late one night, Randy crashed into a set of construction barricades and ended up lying naked in the middle of the road.

When police arrived on scene, they said he smelt of alcohol and refused a breath test. It didn’t help that he also allegedly threatened to “shoot and kill the officers” as well.

Just when you’d think it couldn’t get any more dramatic, Randy is charged with assault later that same month. It all started in the parking lot of the Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, where he got into a dispute involving a woman he knew and her estranged husband.

Randy’s lawyer insisted he was just defending his girlfriend against two attackers, saying, “When he intervened, one of those two attackers attacked Randy, and he defended himself”. Though no one was seriously hurt, the incident adds another spotlight moment of trouble to an already bizarre year.

All these arrests and squabbles seem like a far cry from Randy’s easygoing image and those peaceful ballads we grew up listening to. Fans were left scratching their heads, trying to understand what was really going on behind the scenes.

Sadly, this chain of hardships was soon followed by an even bigger challenge. The following year, Randy suffered a severe health crisis involving viral cardiomyopathy, which led to a coma and a stroke that changed his life forever.

Many people don’t realize that 2012 was the rocky road leading up to that devastating moment. Even when he was facing public scrutiny and personal turmoil that year, no one could have guessed the true magnitude of the battle he would fight after his stroke.

So as we revisit the ups and downs of that fateful year, we have to remember that Randy Travis is more than these headline-making stumbles. He’s a trailblazer with a voice like no other, and his music still resonates with fans of all ages.
